Is giving up diet soda one of your personal fitness goals?

Have you tried before but just found yourself back on the soda train?

This is my story on how I quit drinking diet soda and you can too!

 

 

In October 2012 I decided that I was going to give up my sugar free energy drinks.  I had one every morning before work, and one every afternoon before I worked out.

 

 

They had no carbs, no calories, but I knew they were bad news.  A lot of things happened at once that I took as a sign from the universe telling me to stop.  For one, I needed to save money.  Between my man and I, we were spending an extra $40 each week on energy drinks.  My gym was having a Paleo challenge and Tosca and the Eat Clean Diet diet was doing the October Strike Sugar challenge.  This meant no sugar and no processed sweeteners.

 

 

I decided to start one week early because I wanted a little buffer before the challenges actually began.  The first day I was pretty tired at work.  I’m not a morning person.  I toughed it out, but on the way from work to the gym I needed something to get me going.  I stopped and got the smallest sugar free redbull they had.  I felt so much better, but I wondered could it just be mental?  I mean, how can one sip make me automatically feel better?  That thought was enough to make me realize, it’s all mental.

 

 

The next morning I got a coffee to kick start my day.  Just coffee, 1 stevia packet and some unsweetened, plain almond milk.  I did this for another 10 days or so. The only problem is that I don’t like coffee.  I think it tastes gross and it really upsets my stomach.  Sometimes it even gives me anxiety.  But the coffee served it’s purpose of giving me a substitution drink.

 

 

I found a new solution: Ultima Electrolyte Replenisher.  This is a powder you can add to water that has a light flavor.  It’s sweetened with stevia and is full of electrolytes and vitamins.  I just started adding a scoop to my first couple of glasses of water each morning and the vitamins helped me wake up naturally, the extra water got my digestive system up and running, and it was my new morning drink substitution.

 

 

Now I do not drink any coffee (ever), I don’t drink sugar free energy drinks or diet soda at all.  It’s been months.  I don’t crave them ever.  I don’t have any cravings at all, actually!  I also sleep like a baby and have more energy than I have ever had.  Like, energy when I wake up, energy for my workouts and energy all day long!
 
So here are my top 4 steps to give up diet soda and energy drinks:
1. Realize that it’s all mental.  You don’t need them.  You just think you do because it has been your habit.  It will not make you feel any different to not have one.

 
2. Have a reason to quit.  For me it was money and the two challenges that I was doing.  I like to be true to myself and complete every goal I set out to complete.

 
3. Find a substitution.  There is nothing wrong with coffee, so you could go there.  Or substitute with tea, apple cider vinegar in your water, Ultima Replenisher, seltzer water, etc.

 
4. Just do it.  Tell yourself “Drinking water give me so much energy and I feel great when I stick to water and tea.  It is very easy for me to just enjoy my water and tea.”  Don’t talk about how you “don’t drink soda,” because the universe will only understand that as you talking about/ thinking about soda.  Just say you love whatever your substitution is and remind yourself how easy it is to do it, and I promise, it will be easy!
