5 Fat Loss Mistakes After 40 That Keep You Stuck – 5 Things High-Achieving Women Are Doing That Keep Them Fighting an Uphill Battle With Fat Loss.
You lift weights. You try to prioritize protein. You know your way around a calorie tracker. You’re doing more than most people. So why does it feel like your body isn’t responding the way it used to?
This is the frustrating part for so many women I work with in their 40s: they are not starting from zero. They are already putting in effort. But they are often missing the pieces that help their body actually use that effort.
Fat loss is not just about working harder. It is about creating an environment where your body feels supported enough to change.
Here are five things I see keeping women stuck:
1. You’re eating “healthy” but not eating enough to support your body
A lot of women come to me eating nutrient-dense foods but simply not enough food. They’re busy. Thinking they’ll lose weight, they skip meals or cut calories during the week. They try to “be good” and save calories for later. Unfortunately under fueling consistently can make everything harder.
When you don’t eat enough, you’re not just missing calories.. you’re often missing the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function optimally.
This matters because minerals are involved in nearly every process in your body:
- energy production
- muscle contraction
- thyroid function
- stress response
- recovery
Your body cannot build, repair, and adapt without the raw materials it needs.
2. You’re tracking macros but forgetting about micros
Of course, macros matter. Protein, carbohydrates, and fats all play an important role. But macros do not equal micros.
Two people can eat the exact same calories and macros but have very different results depending on the quality and nutrient density of their food.
Minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc, and others help your body manage stress, recover from workouts, regulate energy, and maintain balance.
You can hit your protein perfectly and still be missing the nutrients that help your body use that protein effectively.
3. You’re training hard but not recovering hard enough
Many women I work with are strong. They lift weights consistently. They walk. They do cardio. So the problem is not their workouts..
The problem is that their body is constantly being asked to perform without enough time, nutrients, or recovery to rebuild. And muscle is built after training, not during it.
If your sleep is inconsistent, your stress is high, and your nutrition is lacking, your body may struggle to recover from the very workouts designed to help you change.
4. You’re living in a constant state of “go”
Work. Kids. Household responsibilities. Exercise. Appointments. Trying to keep everyone else running. Many women spend years being the person everyone depends on, but constantly being “on” comes with a cost.
Stress increases your need for certain nutrients, especially minerals. When your body is under constant demand, those reserves can become depleted.
Minerals help your body handle stress more effectively, support your nervous system, and help you bounce back from the demands of everyday life. Your body is incredibly adaptable but it still needs the resources to adapt.
5. You’re trying to fix the symptom instead of addressing the foundation
When fat loss slows down, many women respond by doing more:
- cutting more calories
- adding more cardio
- pushing harder
- restricting more
But the answer isn’t always more pressure. Sometimes the answer is looking at what your body is missing.
Your metabolism, hormones, energy, and body composition are all connected. When you support the foundation (ie.nutrition, minerals, recovery, stress management, and lifestyle ) your body becomes much more responsive.
The women I work with are not usually lacking effort. They’re often lacking the foundation that allows all of that effort to actually pay off.
