The holiday season is upon us and you know what that means… parties, Christmas cookies, candy canes, eggnog, peppermint bark, pumpkin rolls, Thanksgiving dinner, pies, delicious cocktails and so much more! Below are 8 tips that I use during the holidays to stay on track with my personal fitness goals!

(NOTE: Tip #8 is my favorite.)

– Portion Control your goodies. No, you do not need to eat a whole slice of pumpkin pie, 4 holiday cookies and two glasses of eggnog all at once (guilty as charged). Instead, pick one dessert or have a couple bites of each. That way your cravings will be satisfied and your tummy will thank you.

– Never go to a party hungry. Holidays are filled with parties and parties are filled with food.  Eat a healthy meal prior to the party and pick and choose your goodies instead of diving into all of them.

– This goes along with #2… bring a clean eating recipe to the party. That way, if there is nothing healthy there at least you have your dish to munch on! Try these cherry tomato meatballs.

– Ask friends and family for a “fitness” or “health” related gift for the holidays. Some examples are a new blender, new gym clothes, head phones, etc!

– Stay active. Take a walk before dinner or get in your gym workout routines in before attending any parties.

– Watch out for the cocktails. Having too many can really add up a TON of extra calories.  Stick to the basics like vodka soda, light beer, or my favorite… red wine!

– Plan on doing lots of holiday baking? Substitute some ingredients for healthier ones! Some examples are… substitute sugar for something like honey or maple syrup or substitute oils for unsweetened applesauce.

– The most important tip is to enjoy yourself. Don’t stress over every little holiday treat you eat. Enjoy the time you get to spend with your friends and family and remember what the holidays are all about!
