How I Got Back on Track After Traveling (and How You Can Too). Discover how to get back on track after travel with simple steps to reduce bloating, boost energy, and support digestion so you feel your best fast.
Chicago was amazing — I ate and drank whatever I wanted, and I don’t regret a single bite or sip. But when I came home, my body let me know it was time to reset. I felt bloated, exhausted, irritable, and inflamed… and I had a handful of histamine-intolerance symptoms show up (itchy skin, a rash where I had worn perfume, chest breakouts, sinus congestion, and swollen eyelids).
Travel is fun, but it can also leave your body feeling out of balance. The good news? You don’t have to “punish” yourself or do anything extreme to get back to feeling good. I focused on simple, intentional steps that gave my body the reset it needed — and within a few days, I had my energy and confidence back.
Here’s exactly what I did (and why it works):
1. Prioritized Sleep
The first night I was home, I got 8.5 hours of solid rest. Sleep is when your body does the heavy lifting of repair: lowering inflammation, balancing hormones, restoring energy, and calming down the nervous system. After travel (especially with alcohol, late nights, or different time zones), extra sleep is one of the fastest ways to feel human again.
2. Drank Filtered Water
I started hydrating immediately — lots of filtered water, plus electrolytes. Hydration helps flush out excess sodium and alcohol, supports digestion, and keeps energy levels steady. I use a filtered water pitcher that removes chlorine, heavy metals, and even microplastics. Clean water = less toxic burden on your body so it can focus on healing. I use the Clearly Filtered pitcher and water bottles. Get 10% off with my code here. Use the code CFPartner at checkout.
3. Planned My Meals + Grocery Shopped Right Away
On the plane home, I wrote out a quick menu so I wouldn’t be stuck grabbing whatever was convenient. I went straight to the grocery store and stocked up on healthy, easy-to-make options like pre-chopped cabbage, butternut squash, and cherry tomatoes. Having nourishing food ready to go helped me avoid the post-travel slump of ordering takeout, and it gave my body the nutrients it needed to reset.
4. Took HCl With Meals
Traveling and indulging can slow down digestion. I supported my stomach acid with HCl capsules at meals. Adequate stomach acid is crucial for breaking down protein, absorbing minerals, and keeping digestion smooth. Without it, food can sit heavy and cause bloating. Supporting digestion this way meant I could absorb more nutrients from my food and feel lighter after meals.
5. Added Digestive Enzymes
Along with HCl, I took digestive enzymes with each meal. Enzymes help break down carbs, fats, and proteins more efficiently, which reduces bloating and supports nutrient absorption. Think of them as giving your digestive system a little “assist” while it gets back to normal after being stressed by travel food, alcohol, and restaurant meals. (This is part of my day to day regimen but I made sure not to skip upon coming home!)
6. Used an Herbal Histamine Support Blend
Because I had so many histamine symptoms flare up, I leaned on an herbal blend that supports histamine metabolism. This helped my body process the histamine load more effectively, calmed my immune response, and reduced symptoms like skin irritation and sinus congestion.
7. Applied a Histamine-Calming Lotion
The rash and itchy skin on my neck were driving me crazy, so I used a topical histamine-calming lotion. It gave me immediate relief while the internal work (sleep, water, digestion, herbs) helped lower my overall histamine burden. Sometimes external relief is just as important as the internal work!
8. Returned to My Normal Exercise + Nutrition
Finally, I got right back into my normal workouts and healthy eating routine. No “detoxes,” no extremes. Just consistency. Moving my body boosted my energy and circulation, while balanced meals stabilized my blood sugar and gave me steady fuel.
The Big Picture
I share this because so many women beat themselves up after travel or social events — like they have to “make up” for what they ate or drank. That’s not the case. Your body doesn’t need punishment; it needs support.
When you focus on sleep, hydration, digestion, nutrient-dense food, and gentle movement, your body will bounce back quickly.
And if you want guidance on how to make this your lifestyle — so that you always have tools to reset and feel your best without guilt — that’s exactly what I help women do inside my coaching programs.
