Six Non-Scale Victories to Keep You on Track when Motivation Wanes.
I help women all over the world create bodies and lives they love through online personal training and nutrition coaching. In my experience it’s human nature for us to want results quickly, but that’s not always going to happen.
At first we are motivated and excited to embark on something new, like a new daily workout program or meal plan. But after a couple of weeks the shine wears off and we can’t just rely on the novelty to keep us motivated. The issue here is that we often aren’t quite at a place where we are getting noticeable results yet, which would help us with the dwindling motivation. “Trusting the process,” is admirable but there’s gotta be more we can rely on.
One thing I have my clients look for are non-scale victories, or NSV’s. There’s endless possibilities but these are my favorite six non-scale victories to keep you on track when motivation wanes.
1. You’ve gotten physically stronger.
When you start on a routine of daily workouts, you’re going to get stronger, particularly if you’re strength training. My clients follow a program that ensures this via progressive overload. Get access to the workouts for just $14.
Getting stronger is so special though because it feels so great and it builds confidence. Being able to deadlift more than you’ve ever lifted or getting your first pull-up just feels so amazing.
In fact, I always have my clients set goals that involve something performance based because it just gives the daily workouts more purpose. So as you continue on your journey to reach your long term goals you can see the small victories along the way like holding a plank longer or being able to use 25’s on chest press rather than 15’s.
2. Run of the mill movements have gotten easier.
This is similar to the performance goals but more day to day activities. Maybe you can run up your stairs without getting winded or carrying dog food bags doesn’t require assistance anymore.
When these daily activities get easier and take less effort you know your hard work is paying off. They may be more subtle so pay attention.
3. Your skin looks clearer and brighter.
When you eat well and exercise regularly, you’re likely to have improved digestion, which is crucial to skin health.
Doing little things like eating more fruits and vegetables with antioxidants can make the skin look better by fighting off the damaging free radicals. Hydrating with plenty of water plumps up the cells creating more fullness. And when the digestive system is working properly there’s going to be fewer blemishes.
4. You have more energy.
Of course at first, workouts make you tired- they take energy to do. But after a few weeks your cells start to create more mitochondria. These little cellular powerhouses create fuel for your body from the glucose you consume via food. Having more of them allows you to use the fuel you consume (food) more efficiently.
Additionally, exercise boosts the oxygen circulation inside your body which also assists with energy transfer.
Not to mention when you’re exercising regularly you’re likely to get better quality sleep, which always helps improve energy levels.
5. Things are starting to fit better.
Of course this is a huge one that’s pretty validating, but it’s still worth mentioning.
It may not always just be the skinny jeans or little bikini. It could also be your leggings feeling a little less snug or maybe the underwire of your bra digs in less. Just the other day I was able to slip my wedding ring off without nearly the fight!
6. Others are noticing.
We seem to always be the last to give ourselves credit as humans, and that’s silly, but it’s often the case. Plus, you see yourself every single day, you’re less likely to notice. So when others take notice, LISTEN TO THEM- Your efforts are making a difference!
