Branch chain amino acids are essentially the building blocks of protein. When you put them all together, that is what makes protein. There are nine essential amino acids. These are called essential because our body cannot produce them on its own and we must get them from outside sources. There are 11 non-essential amino acids that our body can make on it’s own. Animal products have all of these amino acids, plant based proteins do not, and if you want to read more about that you can do so here.
One benefit of supplementing with BCAA’s is that they keep our muscles from becoming catabolic. Under stress or going too many hours between meals, our body will break down it’s own muscle tissue to use as energy. If you go too long without food, BCAA’s can help protect your muscles against this. If you do your daily workout in a fasted state BCAA’s protect against this. Or if you are doing intermittent fasting, BCAA’s help protect against this.
Not only that, but BCAA’s help fight cravings. So if you are on a low calorie diet, low carb, low fat, etc BCAA’s can help fight cravings.
Last, BCAA’s increase your insulin, a storage hormone which can help you build muscle, to give you energy which is why they are great before and during your daily workout.
This is my favorite brand of branch chain amino acids – pink lemonade if my fav flavor.
