There is something to be said for showing up to a group fitness class, to following a workout program you found online or sticking to an out of the box diet like Paleo or eliminating gluten. If these things help you, then that is fantastic.

As someone who has been in the fitness industry since 2010, I believe every individual should be on their own plan if they want to achieve their personal fitness goals. I have seen people be on their A game only to completely quit working out because their gym closed. I’ve watched women go from meal prep goddesses to saying screw it and getting fast food because they weren’t able to maintain their strict macros.

When I begin working with a new client I find out where she is now. We look at the frequency of her current workouts, what she has time for and what she has access to. We look at her current eating habits, what her schedule allows for and what she likes.

Then we look at where she wants to be. When I create her plan I meet her where she is to bring her where she wants to go. Let’s look at a few examples of ladies I am currently working with through #Commit2Fit online coaching.

One gal consistently wasn’t making healthy choices with her food. She wasn’t eating enough, then when she did she was choosing low protein, processed foods. These things were standing in her way of reaching her goal of fat loss. I asked her to begin meal prepping and every time that idea was brought up, she fought back, making it evident to me that this would not be a good option for her. So I helped her come up with ideas of things she could eat for breakfast like smoothies, easy snacks like fruit and turkey meatballs. I helped her create a mental list of places she could go to get healthy lunches and she started using a food delivery service for dinner. Her eating is better than ever and she’s on her path for fat loss – we just had to come up with the plan that would be right for her.

Another gal came to me with the goal to lose another 20 pounds in addition to the weight she lost prior to working with me. Initial fat loss can be easy, but to refine can be more of a challenge and we have to come up with new tricks that would work for her body. Now we time her carbs around workouts, we have her lifting more frequently and heavier than she was before and the name of our game is DETAILS, much more than a client beginning her journey.

Then I’ve got another gal whose food journal I go through with her and I’m literally teaching her how to eat clean and eliminate processed foods, get her sugar under 50g/ day and eliminate soda. She does a few workouts a week, but we are really focused on learning what foods have what ingredients and finding substitutes. Rather than eating pancakes with sugar free syrup for breakfast, now she has a small Kodiak cake with a T of real maple syrup and a couple of eggs.

Where you are in your journey is completely unique to you. Your goals are completely unique to you. Your plan should also be unique to you.
