Although Kyra is my “online personal trainer” she has also been one of my closest friends for over ten years. In our early 20’s we used to drink and party and eat whatever we wanted. We were also very lazy vegetarians: eating pizza and chips and drinking beer. We didn’t think much about our weights. The college years are transitional phases in everyone’s life. People’s bodies change; they move away from their homes and sometimes it’s hard to maintain a healthy weight.

 

My weight was steadily increasing through college and I couldn’t stop it. At a solid 160 lbs., I had let myself get really out of shape. I remember crying at the doctor’s office. In high school, I ran track and I weighed about 120 lbs during my teenage years.

 

In my early 20’s, I was jamming myself into my clothes, feeling depressed about the way I looked. I would throw away pictures of myself and sometimes I felt “too fat” to leave the house. I never wanted to go to a beach or wear a dress. I had no confidence. I had a pain in my knee when I tried to jog and the doctor told me to lose 10 lbs and the pain would subside. That really spoke to me.

 

My weight was becoming a health problem. I slowly began to get back into shape doing yoga and Kyra had begun her wild personal fitness adventure, which I kept a close watch on, asking her for advice. Another crucial part to getting fit for me was diet. I had no idea what to eat.

Kyra gave me Tosca Reno’s Clean Eating Recipes book and it changed my life. I suddenly began to watch what I ate: especially breakfast. I used Kyra’s workout plans and her suggestions and began hitting the gym hard. I wasn’t sure how to effectively lift weights and I didn’t know that I need to get my heart rate up: the importance of a good sweat and most importantly: that WORKING OUT IS FUN. It is also hard work and the important thing to remember is not to get discouraged.

 

I had to learn how to LIVE differently. Some days were harder than others. And when I’ve slipped up and pigged out, I just hit the gym hard the next day and kept moving forward. This transition took a lot of time and patience and learning how to cook.

 

Then came the competition. Again, on Kyra’s suggestion that we work on competing together, I decided to step it up. A year ago I was still about 140 lbs., in decent shape for my 5’8” frame, but I wanted to be really toned. I used the “Bikini Competitor’s Cookbook,” clean eating recipes, along with the help of a diet coach.

 

Kyra and I both began to train really hard, instituting workouts from her site and Crossfit. I shed 16 lbs over the 6-8 months (I was already eating clean but I still wasn’t watching portions). I have maintained my weight at a much healthier, much fitter 131 lbs. and I feel great.

Kyra is not just another fitness coach you read about online and follow her advice. Kyra is a true friend and an awesome motivator. She has changed my life. I have so much energy, I am cooking awesome clean eating recipes and I want to compete again in the future. What is more: I look younger, I feel great naked and I get excited to wear bathing suits. Women approach me in airports and bars wanting to know “how I got my arms to look like that.” Women come to ME at the gym and ask for help. I never imagined that would happen. And yes, I know I look a lot better, but the honest truth is, I FEEL really good. My energy is great: I bounce out of bed, I eat five or six small, delicious meals, that I make and I am generally happier. And my knee works just fine. Thank you, Kyra!
