How to Maintain Motivation All Year Long.. Well beyond the first few weeks of a new year.. And well into the year and beyond.
I am absolutely loving how motivated everyone is right now and how many post workout selfies I’m seeing on social media, all the new healthy food posts, all the strangers in the gym. It’s great!
I’m not here to rain on anyone’s parade, but I am here to keep it real and to let you know, you might feel super motivated now, but it won’t always be this way.
It’s the beginning of the year. A fresh start is so fun and exciting. But if you are planning to always rely on being as motivated as you are right now, you are doing yourself a disservice.
You need to take the time right now to come up with your why. The thing that drives you. If you don’t know, then you need to think about it. Tie it to your goal.
To say “I want to lose ten pounds,” isn’t enough. There are going to be days where doing the things you need to do to achieve that goal will feel hard. The weather may be bad. You might not have gotten good sleep. The cake might look very appealing. There will be days, trust me. But if you have a clear understanding and emotional tie to WHY you want to lose ten pounds, you have that to draw upon when will power just isn’t there.
If you feel very strongly about losing ten pounds because you hate the way you feel when you get dressed every day or because you feel unattractive and lack confidence and want to get it back, then you can think of those things when bed or wine is calling your name.
I have a really great podcast interview with my friend, and therapist Liz Fast about this. Check it out here..
This is your best bet in maintain this level of motivation for the rest of the year. Except this is better than motivation. This is what is required to create DISCIPLINE.
