Our bodies are three dimensional and made to move within three planes of motion: the sagittal, frontal and transverse. What do these mean, in laymans terms?
The sagittal plane cuts the body into right and left halves, so these are forward and backward movements. Examples of this would include squats, forward lunges, running, bicep curls, tricep kickbacks, etc.
The frontal plane cuts the body into front and back halves and includes side to side movements such as lateral raises, lateral lunges, side shuffles, side bends, etc.
The transverse plane cuts the body in top and bottom halves and involves twisting exercises such as a seated twist or sports squats, but can also include twisting a limb (internal/ external rotation) as well as one more special movement..
When an arm or leg is held at 90 degrees to the body and moves toward or away from the center, it is a transverse plane movement. This would include bench press, push ups, seated row, seated hip aduction or abduction, etc.
