Fat Loss After 40: What I Look At Before I Ever Tell Someone to Eat Less.
One of the first things many women expect when they come to me for fat loss help is that I’m going to tell them to cut calories. And while calories absolutely matter, that is rarely where I start these days.
Before I ever tell someone to eat less, I want to understand what is actually happening inside their body and whether they have the foundation in place to support fat loss.
Because if your body is stressed, under-fueled, depleted, or not recovering properly, simply eating less may not be the answer. Here are some of the things I look at first:
1. Are you eating enough to support your body?
This is one of the biggest things I see with women who come to me.
They’re busy. They skip meals or try to “be good” during the day. They cut calories throughout the week and then struggle with cravings, hunger, or overeating later.
But under-eating doesn’t just mean you’re eating fewer calories. It often means you’re also not getting enough of the nutrients your body needs to function well.
Your body needs vitamins and minerals for energy production, thyroid function, stress resilience, nervous system regulation, muscle recovery, and so many other processes happening behind the scenes.
You cannot build a strong, resilient body without giving it the resources it needs.
2. Are you recovering from the demands you’re placing on your body?
Most women I work with are not sitting on the couch hoping to lose weight. They’re lifting weights, getting their steps and doing cardio. Most women that come to me are trying their best to make healthy choices.
So the issue is often not effort but whether their body has the ability to recover and adapt from that effort.
Muscle is built when your body recovers from training, not just when you’re pushing through the workout.
Sleep, hydration, nutrition, and minerals all play a role in helping your body repair and come back stronger.
3. What is your stress load?
Stress is not just your job or a stressful event.. it’s your entire lifestyle.
Your work, your kids, your responsibilities, your schedule, your workouts, your lack of sleep, and the constant mental load that so many women carry. When your body is constantly being asked to adapt, it requires more support.
This is why I look at things like energy, sleep, cravings, digestion, and recovery before immediately reducing calories.
Your body is always communicating with you. These are all signs that your body is asking you for something you have not been giving it and we HAVE to start there.
4. Are you getting enough/ the right micronutrients?
This is one that surprises a lot of women because it’s so rarely discussed.
You can hit your macros perfectly and still be missing important pieces. Protein, carbohydrates, and fats matter, but macros do not equal micros.
The vitamins and minerals found in nutrient-dense foods help your body actually use the food you’re eating. They support energy, recovery, hormones, thyroid function, and your ability to handle stress.
Your body cannot function unless you give it the minerals it needs and that’s part of why we start slowing down and shutting down as we age. Every bit we take from our body from poor sleep, to over training, to under eating to trauma takes away from these stores that MUST be replenished.
5. What is your body telling you?
Before I make changes to someone’s nutrition, I want to understand the signals their body is sending.
Are you exhausted all the time?
Are your workouts leaving you depleted instead of energized?
Do you struggle with cravings?
Is your digestion off?
Are you doing all the things and still feeling stuck?
Those things are not random. They are clues.
The women who come to me are rarely lacking effort. They’re usually incredibly disciplined women who have been trying harder and harder without addressing the foundation.
That’s exactly why I created the Root Cause Reset — to help women look beyond just calories and workouts and identify what their body needs to finally start responding.
