Intuitive eating is basically being able to slow down enough to listen to your body’s hunger and full signals.

 

 

The first step in intuitive eating is being mindful and being able to take pause and listen to what our body is trying to tell us.

 

 

If we are sleepy in the afternoon that’s a signal that our body needs some sugar energy, so some carbs like some grapes or oats could be a good call.

 

 

If we are ravenous, that likely means we are not eating enough throughout our days. If we are stuffed from lunch and even though we think we need to eat again, we don’t eat until we are actually hungry again.

 

 

One thing I always ask myself to determine if I’m hungry or not is “would I eat a salad?” If I am willing to eat a bowl of spinach leaves with tomatoes, chicken and other vegetables then that means I am truly hungry. If I’m “hungry,” but would prefer to reach for cereal or peanut butter, I’m likely just having a craving.  But then you could also take that one step further and try to determine why I’m craving cereal, if that’s the case. Have I been working out more lately? Did I not eat many carbs yesterday? Because it may be my body trying to ask for more carbohydrates.

 

 

Intuitive eating is the BEST lifestyle eating program or diet there is. I’ve been doing it for five years. Tracking food online is very cumbersome and time consuming, but tracking food can also be a helpful tool, just not everyday. There is something to be said about listening to our bodies and trusting ourselves.

 

 

However, sometimes the “cookie cutter” diets like keto or Zone diets can be very helpful if someone needs more structure or is just starting out. But anyone and everyone can be working toward eating intuitively. The first step is really to learn to and practice slowing down and trusting yourself.
